Well… I’ve decided to write a little bit of this game, this is such a great game but sadly it is one of those games that never make it out to the states.
This game is made by Flight Plan (published by Banpresto) who also made the Summon Night Sword Craft Stories and the Twin Age whose are lucky enough to make their way into US release, and I will have to give a big applause to Atlus for their willingness to localized the series.
This is the original Summon Night series and have a different world and background from the other two I mentioned earlier.
As of their recent release, Flight Plan released Summon Night X which in Nintendo DS back in November but only available in Japanese. Hopefully Atlus will be able to pick them up and release them in US. In addition to that Summon Night Granthese is also released back in March 2010.
Summon Night 3 is the third installment of the Summon Night Series which is a SRPG that revolves in a world called Lyndbaum, where the human world is connected to several other world which consist of Loreial the Machine World (機); Shiltan the Demon World (鬼), Sapures the Spirits world (霊) and lastly Meitolpa the Phantom World (幻).
All the original Summon Night series will somewhat or another related to these 4 worlds and Humans have the ability to call upon the powers of the others through the summons. And in story wise they are slightly different from one to another and not necessarily related. Like all other Summon Night stories, this game also offer multiple paths and endings and of course also a NG+. Here’s the link to the Summon Night 3 Opening that i found in Youtube.
Some summoned creatures that will be able to help you during your fights
The very first Summon Night was released back in January 2000; Summon Night 3 was released around August 2003; the last series was the 4th one and it is also released quite awhile back in Nov 2006. Currently the Summon Night official page is showing that they are celebrating their 10th year anniversary, there is a lot of wallpapers to grab for the commemorations in their Official Website.
Summon Night 3 allows you to choose between male and female protagonist, you also can choose your ‘alignment’ type of the summon you preferred along with your profession whether as a warrior or as a summoner.
Characters in this game are beautifully drawn and their personality is also very lukewarm and like-able, however you do have the choice of being a bad person and since there are a lot of dialogue options and some of these responses really make you looked like an uncaring jerk.
The male and female protagonist, choose your preference
In the beginning you’re tasking of being a private tutor; therefore in this game you’ll take up a student which you gets to choose from, through the early beginning of dialogue sequences. Each of your student have their own unique ‘Summoned Beast’ according to their Summoning alignment.
Later on they will be playable for the battles each with their weapon differences, as matter of fact in one of the dialogue, they will inform you which weapon they prefer and will use those for battle in the future chapters.
one of these four students will be under your protection and care
This game have quite plenty of supporting characters, whether it is ally or its enemy. I will be only showing some allies at this moment, due to ahem… certain reasons. First and coming up are the Kyle’s pirate gang, whose you encountered in early beginning and quickly become your trusted allies.
Kyle’s gang consist of another 3 key members, Yard, Skarel and lastly Sonora.
Kyle is skilled in hand to hand combat and he is your best and foremost tank (if you are playing as summoner).
Yard is your first summoner (if you picked warrior) and with alignment with the ‘Spirit World’ he is your first and foremost healer in the party.
Skarrel is an interesting character where if I have to say somewhat a thief class where you rely a lot on dodge or the critical hit; Skarrel can hit diagonally thus render some enemies unable to retaliate the attack.
Sonora is your first female companion who loves gun so much, however in the beginning she’ll start with a kunai and much to her chagrin MeiMei the shop owner doesnt allow her to buy some of them in the early of the game and she’ll go ‘Boo…Boo…’, she is good ranged attacker and very good for dishing out some HP off the enemies.
Kyle’s Pirate Gang
Enter the guardian of the island, which the protagonist and Kyle’s Pirate Gang got stuck on. The Island is apparently a refugee of the summons who have been abandoned by their summoners and as they gathered they created domains which is designed for their kind, as I mentioned earlier there are 4 types of summon world in this game and each of this characters represents and also the protector of their kind.
First up is is Ardelia, she can be seen together with an android named Cunnon, together they both oversees and ‘administrate’ over the machine summons on their domain in the island.
Second is Kyuuma, as can be seen he’s the protector of the Oni domains which is ruled by princess Misumi. Kyuuma role is about the same as Skarrel in battle only that he is capable of summoning creatures and spells.
Third is Falzen, strangely enough I was mistook him over some giant beast who protects the Phantom domain, but he is a protector of the Spirit domain over a crystal lake where the place is overseen by the angel, Phalais.
Fourth is Yaffa, he’s a very easy going person in my opinion and the protector of the Phantom domain in the island. He is normally seen with Maruruu a fairy who really liked the protagonist and always tries her best to get to know with him/her. Yaffa roles is similar with Kyle, however he has the ability of ‘berserk’, status cleansing and also summoning capabilities.
The Protector of 4 domains
The gameplay is a very simple, as for the battle you’ll thrown into a 3D map and you’ll begin a turn based strategy game. The battle wise, the game features things such as Brave clear, Summon Stones, Unit Summons, Sword Invoke and Booby trapped terrains.
Brave clears are apparently some bonuses that you will get in certain condition, bonuses such as Party Points and party abilities which can be equipped to further enhance your team capabilities.
Summons stones are used to summon creatures or items from different world, they mostly corresponds to the current equipment that is worn by the party during the battle. Each summons consumes summons stones that can be found throughout the chests in the battle.
With the right items and stones, you can summon a creatures to attack and assist, or an item will appear in exchange for your summon, or even sometimes an illustration for your gallery, furthermore your summon however can fail and it’ll bring out different bunch of trash upon your head which will decrease your HP.
Unit summons are used to summon extra unit to help you with fight, their status and level will be determined and increased if they are fed with their favorite food. They are useful at times to fight hordes of enemies.
Sword Invoke is the ability of the protagonist to invoke the ability of the magical sword which will double the protagonist stats making him very strong, but the nature and side effect of the sword is highly questionable and needs to be investigated….
Booby trapped terrains, some terrains can be destroyed and some even contains bobby traps, they are useful thus can be used for it’s best advantages.
Other than the battle, the storyline mostly goes into a series of dialogue where you get to delve and learn more about the character better. Some of the dialogue will prompt special selections and those selections will determine you are a good person or a bad person
You’ll pretty much spent a lot on talking to various people, like Sonora or others
In addition like other Summon Night series, the game also features the Night Talk. This usually available at the end of chapter and it is necessary to use it to enhance your friendship with your talk partner. Noticeably you will also see a slightly different art of the character that is used for the Night Talk. And the more Night Talk you commence with them, you will gain more towards the character ending, which i’ve read there’s total need of 40 replays to get all the characters ending.
A little night talk with Kyle to enhance friendship
That is all I can say for the current post, I might or might not post more, however I will try to obtain more information as I played more into the game. I am very sure they are huge and large amount cast of characters that is ready for me to recruit, and in addition a about 58 summons out of 62 that can needed to be summoned.
Until then, here is so far is my opinion of this game….. I have trouble finding some good screenshots, i will have to take the pictures with my camera until then i’ll put more pictures for uploads to be clear on the battle sections.
Thank you for reading ^^;
ah and to commemorate the 10th years of Summon Night, I have too changed my desktop background hehe….
Happy 10th Anniversary for Summon Night Series!
